Drilling Bentonite

Borewell Drilling Bentonite

Bentonite has some exceptional properties: when stirred into water, it demonstrates thixotropic behavior in which it becomes thinner and less viscous. It therefore acts as a fluid when mechanically stressed.

As a flushing fluid, bentonite seals the drilled shaft from water ingress downwards and at the sides of the shaft. The mineral forms a firm sludge cake on the bore wall, which provides the borehole with additional stability. The fine bentonite particles enter into the bore wall where they swell and harden. Depending on the constitution of the ground structure, fine and coarse particles are needed.

Drilling Process

The bentonite in the flush fluid lubricates and cools the cutting tools while protecting against corrosion. As the drilling fluid generates hydrostatic in the borehole. The drilling liquid conveys the drill cuttings to the surface.

Fluid mixture that is used in oil and gas drilling operations to carry rock cuttings to the surface and also to lubricate and cool the drill bit. The drilling mud, by hydrostatic pressure, also helps prevent the collapse of unstable strata into the borehole and the intrusion of water from water-bearing strata that may be encountered.

Borewell & Tubewell

Borewells & Tubewells, are very similar. Both are basically vertical drilled wells, bored into an underground aquifer in the earth’s surface, to extract water for various purposes. The difference in the two lies in the type of casing used, the depth of this casing and the type of soil where they are drilled. Casing to support the external surfaces of the borehole against collapse may be needed at certain depths.

In order to exert stabilizing pressure on permeable walls of an excavation, bentonite slurry must from a seal on or near the surface of the soil. This avoids loss of slurry into the soil, with consequent increase in pore pressure and reduction in shear strength and enables the slurry to exert its maximum stabilizing effect.
